President Russell Lamattina said the party needed the official go-ahead from its Melbourne office to scout candidates.
“We haven’t been officially spoken to in terms of Peta, so we can’t really take it seriously until we get word from our head office or herself. We’re running it at the moment like she won’t run, and we are seeking other local people to run,” he said.
“Our branch – along with the other Mallee branches – are working to find someone. It’s just a matter of head office giving us directive of how we can do that.
“Whether it’s a matter of them putting someone to us or letting us pre-select ourselves. At this point it’s still not guaranteed depending on what head office says.”

Chris Crewther unsuccessfully ran for the seat of Mallee in the 2013 election for the Liberal Party. He is now the Federal Member for Dunkley.
Mr Lamattina said the party wanted to be prepared for the election by having a candidate lined up.
“We want to make sure it’s not a repeat of last time where Chris only had three months to prepare,” he said.
