14 Wimmera umpires will take on field, boundary and goal umpiring roles for the under-18 and senior football matches between the Horsham District league and the Loddon Valley Football League.

Four umpires from Ballarat will also take part.

Wimmera and District Umpires co-coach Cameron Pickering said it was a thrill to be involved.

"It's a prestigious gig and something we're proud to be involved in," Pickering said.

"We've been pretty big advocates to remain involved with the game in Horsham, whereas in the past umpires have had to travel here.

"We're doing all the junior games and half of the senior game. It's a really good coup for us."

Pickering said the crew involved were also illustrative of a recent influx in junior umpires.

"The amount of youth that have come on board in umpiring recently has been really positive," Pickering said.

"We've always had plenty of stalwarts but it's pleasing to know we've got youth on board and we're giving them opportunities."

Pickering said an important aspect was improving the pathway from regional areas to the highest levels of umpiring.

He said AFL Victoria had been making it easier for rural umpires to progress into the state leagues.

"Because of opportunities like the Community Championships, you can see that pathway to the next level of umpiring," Pickering said.

"AFL Victoria have really provided a path that wasn't there for umpires 10 or 20 years ago.

"We're trying to make it as easy as possible to make it so that kids can go through to the next level with umpiring, which is really exciting and it's getting people involved."
