CWTA president Jeremy Quast said the executive was united in the decision.
"We haven't named anyone winners or premiers this season. The wording we've decided is grand finalists," he said. "We wanted to recognise that we'd played a final and the best case scenario we came up with was to recognise the teams that progressed into the grand final.
"There is actually no winner, and there's no runner-up. We then went on to recognise the top four sides that made it into finals."
A single round of finals was played last week, from which the grand finalists were determined.
"We were all united and agreed that what we had done with finals, was the fairest and best way," Mr Quast said.
"One, we're still recognising the four teams that made finals for that year and congratulating them. But, we're also congratulating the team that made the grand final.
"You can't say, 'oh one and two played last week, that's the grand final'. That's disrespectful to the teams that finished third and fourth because they had every chance to win it as well."
Trophies will be distributed to clubs in due course.
"On the pennant shield, for example, it will say "2019-20 season Kalkee, grand finalists," Mr Quast said. "If you think about going forward 20 years, if (players) want to show their kids the trophy they can explain that in that season we had a virus come through that wiped out the whole globe. You can tell your kids that and say you actually made the grand final, but no one won."
